I admired Spud but he had much more confidence with the ladies than me, being a singer, and he successfully charmed a
girl I liked named Sarah. I was a young man then, and wished I could be more confident like him. Spud, you took my girl!
I spoke to Spud one time at a gig in Ilkley I think, when I became a teddy boy myself. He was surrounded by girls
as usual and they were all going mad for him and the band. I told him when he came off stage mopping his head furtively, "You're
better than Elvis, man". I doubt if he remembers me at all, but I was the young lad who came over from my hometown as a 17
year old, forced to wear square clothes by my disapproving parents and then walking through the town I came across a gang
of lads maybe 10 or 12, and Spud with the biggest quiff, drape with little blue flecks, bootlace tie and trendy
beetle crushers. He exchanged a few harsh words about my attire, slung his guitar over his shoulder pouting and frowning and
wandered off with a swagger.
I didn't know who he was then, but when I became interested in rock 'n' roll, I went to gigs in my local area, and that's
where I saw him again.
Spud, you almost beat up your biggest fan-to-be!
I will update this site regularly so keep coming back.
I was known in those days as Spiff (in case you were wondering.)
