Dennis (Spud) Murphy
Welcome!

This is a page dedicated to a unique talent that sadly went almost unnoticed. Huddersfield's answer to Elvis Presley, the only thing he lacked was a Pink Cadillac and a mansion in Memphis. With regards to vocal ability, he could have easily matched The King himself.
In a multitude of bands from the late 50's onwards including The Playboys and The Witchdoctors, he sung and played guitar to many keen audiences. With his fondness for ale and the ladies, he slipped the notice of any talent spotters, but to anyone who knew of him would know that he had the number one spot in the charts reserved from the day he sung his first note.
So here is a modest but well-deserved place on the world wide web, for a man who was truly a legend.
Where are you now Spud?
The mic and spotlight are waiting.

I admired Spud but he had much more confidence with the ladies than me, being a singer, and he successfully charmed a girl I liked named Sarah. I was a young man then, and wished I could be more confident like him. Spud, you took my girl!
I spoke to Spud one time at a gig in Ilkley I think, when I became a teddy boy myself. He was surrounded by girls as usual and they were all going mad for him and the band. I told him when he came off stage mopping his head furtively, "You're better than Elvis, man". I doubt if he remembers me at all, but I was the young lad who came over from my hometown as a 17 year old, forced to wear square clothes by my disapproving parents and then walking through the town I came across a gang of lads maybe 10 or 12, and Spud with the biggest quiff, drape with little blue flecks, bootlace tie and trendy beetle crushers. He exchanged a few harsh words about my attire, slung his guitar over his shoulder pouting and frowning and wandered off with a swagger.
I didn't know who he was then, but when I became interested in rock 'n' roll, I went to gigs in my local area, and that's where I saw him again.
Spud, you almost beat up your biggest fan-to-be!
I will update this site regularly so keep coming back.
I was known in those days as Spiff (in case you were wondering.)
